Rajai Davis helped get Dave Littlefield fired, as he was the guy Littlefield traded to the Giants for the expensive corpse of Matt Morris. So, I've always liked him.

Does Jacoby Ellsbury count as an active player?

Josh Bell leads the majors in RBI while playing for the 16th-best offense in baseball. He's second in batting average, third in slugging percentage, third in OPS, tied for fourth in homers, the only player in baseball with at least 13 doubles and at least 13 homers (and he's got 15 of each). In May, he leads the majors in hits (32), RBI (26), home runs (10), slugging percentage (.873), and OPS (1.339) and is second in batting average (.405).

Statcast metrics? Second in average exit velocity, second longest HR of the season, seventh longest average home run distance, second most hard-hit balls, second in hard-hit percentage, tied for third most barrels, and fifth in barrels per PA.

Also in May, he became the fifth player in PNC Park history to hit a homer into the Allegheny River on the fly. And then two weeks later became the first player to do it again. Because all he hits are bombs: 430 feet, 446 feet, 460 feet, 451 feet, 474 feet, 423 feet, 416 feet.

The Pirates' announcers were talking during a game the other day that he's approaching Ralph Kiner territory: no matter what the score is, you don't leave until you've seen his last plate appearance.

He was a mid-round draft pick for my fantasy team, and I'm quite pleased.

If you were to think up a name for a flash in the pan Pirates player who had a great half season and then was never heard from again, you couldn’t do better than “Josh Bell” js

There are some reasons the improvement could be real, although you should expect some regression. He's 26, he had a second half last year that was better than anything he'd done before, and the power is certainly real (at least as real as anyone's with the rabbit ball MLB rolled out this season).

The Statcast metrics are particularly encouraging. He's not getting lucky, he's absolutely clobbering the ball.

Looking at it another way, there's every chance that this is Josh Bell's career year, so you want him to make it a good one.

And the announcer was the first person in 17 years to say "holy mackerel".

That's not true, he says it all the time.
