With the US and Netherlands not in (and thus no countries I've lived in being in), I'm definitely not as excited this year. I guess I'll root pure Scandinavia, with Sweden as my favorite just because I've studied their history the most. I do like the Icelandic sagas and Hans Christian Anderson so the rest of Scandinavia isn't far behind.

I'm not really a soccer guy, so my interest in the sports waxes and wanes with the World Cup. I know the best players in the world, and that is about the extent of my knowledge outside of the USA team, which makes my rooting interests more or less based on my experiences in certain countries or my impressions of them.

With no USA, Poland is my #1 rooting interest, as my family heritage is Polish (grandma came over during WWII) and I was in Poland at a bar watching the 2016 Euro shootout loss to Portugal, where my fandom grew.

Next tier would be Mexico (proximity), Croatia (again, was in Split watching in 2016 when they took down Spain in the Euro pool play - and Croatia is just a nice place to spend time), and Argentina (Messi, obviously, and it's a lovely country).

Following that, give me Morocco (always wanted to visit), Peru, Belgium (from past World Cup they have just felt like an easy side to root for), and Colombia (always had a soft spot in my heart).

Sweet hey zeus, it's almost here! This is basically the only sporting event remaining that I still get excited about. I'll definitely be rooting for the Saudis against Russia. Can't hold the evils of a government against the people of that country or their national team. If that were the case, I'd be skipping the opener entirely.

Edit: Trump's birthday is also on the 14th.

Damn, that is a good quiz. England for me. Spot on. Also, maybe Japan. Yes to that, too.

Spain just fired their manager for accepting the Real Madrid job without giving the FA any advance notice!
