We missed out on Brian Dunn last time we played them. He's a good offensive guard that is averaging 16 a game in just 24 minutes. He's a tremendous foul shooter as well. They have talent but this has been a bad year for them. It would be hard to assume even 1 win in this coming road trip against UCO and Arkansas-Monticello so a win in this one would be big.

    1976-1977 Game 27 Results

A sloppy start for both teams and at the 1st media time out we trail 5-6 with 15:16 left. Weeden hits an early three pointer.

Santana picks up his 2nd foul with 14:25 and we're trailing 8-11. Ike Walker replaces Santana.

I call a time out with 8:44 to put an end to some brutal basketball. We trail 13-22. Ward is going to sit for a bit and G. Walker will be the focal point of the offensie for a few minutes. Weeden, Philip and Gunderson are the perimeter players currently.

The next play Baker goes down and won't be able to return.

All the starters come back in, regardless of foul trouble when I call a time out with 6:10 left and we're trailing 17-30.

The starters play a little better and at half time the score is Nicholls State 36 - Cetenary 26.

Ward has 15, but very little help from anywhere else.

The first media time out is at 14:57 and we trail 37-47. Ward hits another three pointer.

We go on a 7-0 run and a Weeden steal and lay up forces Nicholls State to call a time out with 13:48 left and their lead cut to 44-47. Now to start gingerly putting in reserves.

With 9:14 left we trail 50-55. Ward has yet another 3 and is up to 27. Walker has 3 fouls.

All the starters are back in with 6:11 left, and we're down 55-58. I don't know if they'll all be able to make it to the end, but we're going to try. Nadler is up to 13 boards.

The last media time out is with 3:53 left and we're down 57-61.

Santana sinks two free throws to make it a 2 point lead, 59-61 with 2:30 left.

Ward drills a three with 1:21 left and ties the game at 64.

Nadler commits a shooting foul, Nicholls hits 1 and now we trail 64-65 with 46 seconds left.

Immediate turnover and bucket and we're down 3 , 64-67 with 42 seconds.

We miss our next shot, get into a free throw thing for a bit and don't score any more baskets anyways. Final score Nicholls State 71 - Centenary 64.

Lose our last home game of the year, baring a spot in a post season tournament, and we finish 3-6 at home in conference play. Ward had 30 on 25 shots. Lamanna killed us with his best game of the year and a ridiculous 10-12 from the field.

Baker's injury turns out to be serious and he's done for the year. He dislocated his shoulder. Baker finishes his freshman year with averages of 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds a game in 11.3 minutes.

Finishing above .500 this season will be a tall task with the two opponents on deck.

Listed as a point guard but will play solely the 2 for me. Looks like a true scoring guard, that's primarily a three point shooter, that has some size and versatility in the positions he can play. We really needed some guards to come in this year as the only one coming back worth a shit is Weeden.

    The entire class:
    Code:
    CENTENARY GENTLEMEN Recruiting

James Wine PG 6-3 184 *** Committed North Carolina

Due to defense, I see Weeden staying as the starting point guard next season and I'd assume Levesque and Wine will fill out the other two spots. Harkness is intriguing, my scout thinks he can really shoot the lights out. Avery probably won't be much more than a strong defensive wing, he's the only true SF we're adding this year, though.

Hopefully, one of the posts can redshirt. Downey seems the most likely to make a contribution right away due to his offense. Next year we will have Tong and Baker returning but also have senior walk on Silas Corpuz who is a really good, legit 7 foot defender. He can probably get away with 5 minutes a game, if Downey or Perry will accept a redshirt.

6-1 on the road in conference play. If I were Central Oklahoma or Arkansas-Monticello, wouldn't be exactly confident of getting a result. That's a good way of getting that sour taste out of the mouth from losing to the likes of Nicholls State.

You had three 3-star recruits on the entire roster and to bring in 5 of them in one class is a marvel for this level of basketball. Even with all these seniors graduating, next year's team should be an improvement.

Just noticed that Ward went 9/13 from 3-pt range and the rest of the team was 1/12. Ward himself went a wretched 1/12 inside the arc. He has one talent and that's all that is necessary at this level to be a star player.

They've ran through the Southland season and look like a legit threat to maybe win a game in the NCAA tournament. They bring back most of it next year, too. They lose Aker and some of the reserve guards, but the rest of the starting lineup are just juniors.

Aker, their 5'9" starting point guard, was out for our first game between them. He's had a pretty good year. Not nearly as good as his ridiculous 55-101 performance from three last year, but he's a solid defender who grabs steals and can shoot it a bit. Gallaway (16 ppg) and Jackson (12.9 ppg) are a tough matchup for our 2-3 zone, both of them can really shoot it. After a season like this, I assume their young coach Andreas Davis will turn this season into a better job.

    1976-1977 Game 28 Results

With Baker out of the game and our post depth down to one guy basically, I'm going to play even slower than usual to try to keep Nadler and G. Walker on the court as long as possible.

The first media time out is at 15:31 and we trail 8-11. Ward has all 8 points and all 4 rebounds we have so far. An early theme to this game is UCO dominating on the glass, all but 2 of their points have been on second chances.

The second media time out is at 11:38 and we trail 13-16. Ward still has all of our points and all but one of our rebounds (thanks Nadler).

George Walker actually scores 4 straight points, making him the first guy to score besides Ward and we trail 19-26 with 6:44 left. They are outrebounding us 17-8 and we have 6 turnovers already. Have to tighten up the rebounding or we're sunk.

UCO burns a time out with 30 seconds left in the half and we're only down 32-35 thanks to Paul Ward's 21 points including a 3 that made them call a time out.

The time out works in their favor, because they complete a 3 point play to take the score into half time as Central Oklahoma 38 - Centenary 32. Both Ward and Santana picked up a couple of fouls in the last 30 seconds and now they both have two. Ward has 21 points and then Walker's 6 is the next most. Gibbs for UCO is killing me inside with 11 points and 7 boards already.

I call a time out with us losing 37-46 with 14:22 left. Gibbs has 4 rebounds already all of them offensive for UCO. Gallaway is up to 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Ward sinks a couple of free throws to make it 49-56 with 9:28 left. We keep getting close and they hit a couple of shots to separate from us a bit.

We hit back to back threes and UCO calls a time out with us trailing 56-61 with 7:03 left. Walker's got 16 points now to go with Ward's 23 and Weeden's 12. We're shooting 56% from the field, but our 18 turnovers are killing us.

A very similar situation to the last time we played them, UCO goes cold and isn't scoring, but we aren't taking advantage. We trail 56-63 with 3:37 left in the game.

We totally choke and miss free throws, turn it over, all sorts of stuff and the final sore is Central Oklahoma 65 - Centenary 59.

Ward, Walker and Weeden have good games, but very little help outside of that. Santana with just 2 points. A lot of turnover problems and going cold down the stretch cost us, we had a real chance in that game despite all the things going against us. They out shoot us 69 attempts to 44.
