May 29th: We just lost Darren Dreifort to a forearm strain for 4-5 weeks. This is rough because we also recently lost Britt Reames and Ben Weber for extended periods and our pitching is getting threadbare. Trey Moore (50/45/45) will take Dreifort's spot in the rotation, and Armando Reynoso was added to the 40-man roster and called up to serve as the swingman.

We've slid to 25-23 and down to 4th place, but we're just 1.5 back of the Yankees and Red Sox who are 25-20 and 26-21, respectively. Delgado has 18 homeruns through 48 games with a 1.131 OPS. Stan Belinda's been a great pickup with 10.1 K/9 and a 1.91 ERA, on pace for 127 innings pitched. He's a bargain at just $2.5M but is asking for an extension of $7.5Mx5, which he's surely not going to get, but is also not pegged for free agent compensation, so I'm going to have a decision to make in July and possibly again in October.

In an effort to bolster our pitching, get younger, and make sure we get some return for an impending free agent, we dealt Crazy Carl to the Tigers for 26-year-old Justin Thompson. He had a 3.40 ERA and 1.9 WAR in 100 innings last year but went down with a damaged elbow ligament and missed nearly an entire year. He just had a rehab start in AAA where he went 6 innings and allowed a run (but walked 7). I'll give him one more rehab start after missing so much time and then he'll head to our big league rotation. He's rated at a fully developed 50/55/60. He only has 40 stamina but averages about 6 innings per start and our bullpen is becoming a real strength.

Everett batted .270/.311/.415 with 1.6 WAR last year and had a .357/.339 OBP/SLG this year but he's in the last year of his deal and at 55/55/50/45/45 doesn't look like a long-term asset, especially with Matt Holliday knocking down the door and Josh Hamilton OPSing .949 with two A-ball affiliates this year and getting promoted to AA. We had Jose Cruz and Todd Dunwoody on the bench and now they'll both get a chance to play more. We also have Midre Cummings sitting in AAA so I'm not concerned about losing Everett's production.

July 1st: We're hanging in there at 40-37 but the top teams are starting to pull away. We've fallen 8.5 back of the 47-27 Yankees, and we're 4.5 back of the wildcard but with three teams between us and the leading Indians. There's some cause for hope as Darren Dreifort just made a rehab start and RP Ben Weber just returned from the DL, but we might be too far back to catch up given our already on-the-brink-of-possible-contention squad. We'll see how July shakes out but then it could be time to think about dealing Belinda, Willie Greene, and/or Gregg Jefferies (sic), all pending free agents. Belinda has a 1.31 ERA and 73 K's in 61 IP while Greene has a .730 OPS and Jefferies (sic) has been pretty awful but has lots of Veteran Presents. I could even think of trading Jeff Juden, who is in the first year of a three-year deal, but at 28 and 2 stars, might bring more value in a trade now than he would by sticking around until he's 30. He's only been worth 0.5 WAR so far but he could be useful to a real contender.

Delgado's OPS sits at 1.067 and his 27 homers in 77 games puts him on pace for 57. He's second in baseball to Ken Griffey, whose 34 homers put him on pace for 71, which would shatter the record that is still held by Roger Maris. While we're looking at record paces, Todd Helton is hitting .405.

Posada (.806) and Spezio (.802) have been solid while Aurilia, Payton, Green, and Cedeno are all in the .700s.

July 12th: Stan Belinda, Jorge Posada, and Carlos Delgado are our first All-Stars in franchise history. We're 44-44 at the break and it's time to start looking for deals. 10.5 back of the Yankees and 5 out of the wildcard behind six other teams.

Josh Hamilton has been struggling with his morale. I promoted him from A to AA where he was hitting reasonably well, but his mood started to sour over his role on the team, which was made even worse when I sent him back to A. I'm not sure what role he wants as he has no expectation stated. His OPS has fallen from the high 700s down to .662 and I'm going to send him back to A. Can't upset him any more than he already is.

Holliday has a 1.034 OPS in AAA but is now expecting to be promoted even though our scouts say he still has a huge hole in his swing. He'd have been a September callup at the latest and by now I've delayed his free agency so it's probably about time to give him his first taste of the Majors, even if I'm not sure he'll be there to stay yet.

Griffey has hit four more homeruns this month to put him at 38 and on pace for 70. Helton is hitting .413.

Maybe Hamilton has some cravings that no amount of baseball can satisfy.
