    Middle East thread

The Russian ambassador to Turkey assassinated over the country's actions in Syria with a newly elected American despot seeking both to escalate war in the Middle East and ally with Russia. This will surely end well.

It sounds like the assassin was an off-duty Turkish police officer as well. Not good for the pre-existing tensions between Turkey-Russia; the former shot down a fighter jet of the latter just over a year ago.

Yeah, the NYT article has an image of the dead ambassador in the foreground. It's pretty eerie.

So... not to get all radical here (ok maybe a little) but I feel like if you brutally oppress your own citizens or especially brutally oppress other nations' citizens, you should probably expect terrorism to happen.

Yeah, a shooting happening in front of a press corps makes for very dramatic photographs.

Oh good, well that should help prevent World War 3.

I feel like "terrorism" has become totally tautological now where it's just "anything done by terrorists". You don't have to condone (and I certainly don't) this Jerusalem truck attack to consider it qualitatively different than the France and Germany truck attacks that targeted civilians and yet it's reported with exactly the same terminology. It doesn't seem quite right - I mean, I do accept the premise that civilians killed by U.S. drone strikes are qualitatively different from civilians killed in specifically indiscriminate terrorist attacks, but doesn't the corollary of that mean you have to treat corresponding attacks on military targets by those terrorist groups differently as well? I'm not so much talking about Israel here - their extremist position on security issues speaks for itself - but for how we cover those kinds of things in the U.S., or when it's U.S. soldiers who are the ones killed. I just feel like I missed the exact point where we stopped distinguishing altogether.

    dola,

In a big way it doesn't make a difference - be any particular attack targeted at civilians or soldiers there's still justification to kill the people carrying it out, it just seems like blurry definitions have often been a factor in the worst excesses of the War on Terror. It's a war until the Geneva Convention makes that inconvenient, then it's a criminal matter until habeas corpus makes that inconvenient, then it's a REDACTED matter.

Not exclusively related to the Middle East, but I thought this interview with Chris Murphy was interesting.

He’d leave little notes for himself saying ‘You are not a chicken,’ although sometimes he thought he hwas lying.
