You can sort of play as a merchant empire now but you'll never technically win the game.
In the end, I think that this is what almost every 4x space game gets wrong. Space should feel spacious - there should be lots of opportunities for sabotage, subterfuge, and espionage. Spaceships should feel more like submarines and less like tanks.

Took another Stellaris game right up to an endgame crisis over the weekend, but ultimately couldn't prevail. It probably doesn't help that most of the endgame spoilery stuff spawned within my empire's borders.

The dev diaries for the new Stellaris patch look pretty exciting. They seem like they should add a lot of nuance to planet development and empire planning.

I have finally gotten an empire through the endgame crisis of a game. Of course, I am playing as the XT-489 Eliminator preset empire - so we probably pose as much threat to the galaxy as any invader. I expect to be able to win at this point, as the only enemy left that seems at all challenging is one awakened empire.

I was able to get a domination victory in this game by occupying 40% of all habitable planets. Following this victory as robotic monsters, I'm going to try a game as the United Nations of Earth and try for a more diplomatic approach.

Decided to give this a whirl again and the latest patch changed so much that I'm basically relearning the game from scratch. It's effectively a sequel to the original now. I think it's better but I'm not sure yet.

I'm going to pick up the new expansion whenever it goes on sale on Steam. I think I will miss the planet surface management window. The screenshots I've seen of planetary management look a little Victoria 2-esque (i.e. not intuitive).

That is definitely the part I am struggling the most with. Basically every planetary surface system is completely different now and I dug myself into a huge hole that I couldn't get out of in my first game. I do agree the tiles were much better aesthetically. I liked seeing the population pictures.

My lesson learned: credits and minerals are base items. You use polymers (or whatever it's called) which are made from a building that creates them out of minerals. You need luxury goods to keep your pops happy, which is from buildings which use minerals. However, don't convert all your minerals to other things because minerals are still used to build buildings and space mines/research stations. There is a galactic market screen now where you can bail yourself out but if you get negative growth and low amounts on both minerals and credits, I'm not sure how you can get out of that downward spiral.

Trade also factors into that too but I'm still not clear how that works, other than it's 100% credits by default but you can switch to credits/luxury mix or credits/unity at lower rates.
